The Artists Behind Nomad's World

Rita and Chance have returned year after year to the far flung places they love to visit and support the artisans whose work you see in Nomad's World Gallery. Over time Rita and Chance have watched their families grow and their artistry develop along new lines and ancient ways. Their long term relationships with these individuals and families have resulted in Nomad's World's "beyond fair trade" practices that share success and prosperity with all the craftspersons with whom they deal.

By creating a demand for recycled and sustainably harvested materials, Rita and Chance encourage salvage of wonderful old woods (from retired bridges, boats and houses), architectural elements from traditional buildings, beautiful old saris (made into quilted pillows by Ibu Jero and her women), colored glass, bamboo, stone, and even bone (don't miss the exquisite carved cow skulls from Surya in Bali.)

Quilted Pillows from Recycled Sarongs
Ibu Jero is 54 years old and has been making her lovely pillows in Bali since 1975. She fills them with kapok, a natural stuffing that comes from a tree that produces large pods filled with fluffy, cotton-like material. Until last year, Ibu Jero employed thirty-five women, but due to a shrinking economy, she now has only five working for her. Her work is exquisite and your purchase of a beautiful pillow will delight you and help Ibu Jero and her people.
Balinese artist Bone Carvings
Surya (a.k.a. B-Bone) is a fourth generation bone carver in Bali. Only 27 years of age, Surya has been carving for over twelve years, specializing in bone and horn. Surya employs twenty-eight friends and family from his village and nearby. Surya's skill and artistry is sublime and getting better. If you're looking for a very unusual and beautiful gift, Surya's carved cow skulls are extraordinary.
